Mandaikadu Bhagavathi Amman Temple is one of the most revered Shakthi temples in Tamil Nadu, located near in Mandaikadu village on the sea shore in Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, near Nagercoil. The temple is uniquely known for worshipping the Goddess in the form of a sacred anthill, symbolizing the powerful presence of Mother Bhagavathi.

Temple History & Spiritual Significance

The main deity of Mandaikadu Temple is worshipped as a 15-foot tall anthill, which currently stands at around 12 feet in height and is believed to be continuously growing. The anthill is said to have five heads, and devotees believe it represents the living form of Mother Goddess Shakthi.

According to popular belief, the murti of Bhagavathi Amman stands on the exact spot where Adi Shankaracharya performed pooja to a sacred Sri Chakra. Even today, a Sri Chakra is installed inside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple.

The face of the Goddess is visible at the upper portion of the anthill, and the temple follows traditional Kerala-style temple architecture, reflecting the cultural influence of the region.

  • Silver Body Parts: Offered by devotees suffering from ailments related to hands, legs, or other body parts.
  • Mandaiappam: A sweet made of rice flour and jaggery, offered by devotees suffering from headaches or head-related issues.
  • Cradle Offering: Performed by couples praying for children.
  • Vedi Vazhipadu: Lighting of temple crackers to remove evil eye or negative influences.
  • Monsooru Ritual: Devotees eat temple prasadam placed on the ground as part of this sacred ritual.

The most important festival of the temple is celebrated during the Maasi month (February – March). This annual festival attracts more than a million devotees from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and other parts of India.
